♫ New Music: Repercussions by Lauryn Hill // Nicki Minaj Comparisons

I am beyond excited in writing this post... New music from the iconic Lauryn Hill. I don't know whether its an unreleased song that leaked or is off of her upcoming project, but its something I've never heard and I'm loving it. I can't wait to see her at the Rock The Bells Tour.. Listen & download Lauryn Hill's “Repercussions”here

Sometime last week, Murder Inc's Irv Gotti sat down with VIBE and told them that Nicki Minaj was like a modern day Lauryn Hill...
"The world has yet to see the best of Nicki Minaj. What she’s delivering to the world now is basically what they want. But I know that she’s a super talented superstar who can do anything at a high level—rap, sing, act, whatever she wants to do. This is just the beginning of Nicki Minaj. Her best is yet to come. In my opinion she is as talented as my other girl Lauryn Hill. They have completely different styles. But as far as the talent is concerned they both can do it all. Nicki just isn’t showing it yet ’cause she doesn’t want to. But world be prepared ’cause she’s the truth!"
STOP. Someone should slap Irv for such ludicrous statements. There will never another Lauryn Hill... & I've heard the "real" Nicki Minaj, pre-barbie, pre-surgery, pre-autotune//dramatics... and she was cool, but no Lauryn. Check out the "real" Nicki below...

Lauryn Hill Speaks After 8 Years

NPR's Zoe Chace got an interview with one of the greatest emcees of all time, Lauryn Hill. Lauryn's last interview was over eight years ago, and her last performance in the states was over 10 years ago, so hearing from her, in any form is epic... I can't even imagine how Zoe felt in speaking with her, but I'm sure she felt amazing. Check out a few quotes and listen to some interview audio.

Why did you stop putting out music? "There were a number of different reasons," she says. "But partly, the support system that I needed was not necessarily in place. There were things about myself, personal-growth things, that I had to go through in order to feel like it was worth it. In fact, as musicians and artists, it's important we have an environment — and I guess when I say environment, I really mean the [music] industry, that really nurtures these gifts. Oftentimes, the machine can overlook the need to take care of the people who produce the sounds that have a lot to do with the health and well-being of society, or at least some aspect of society. And it's important that people be given the time that they need to go through, to grow, so that the consciousness level of the general public is properly affected. Oftentimes, I think people are forced to make decisions prematurely. And then that sound radiates."

"The feeling that you get," she says, "I get first. I think you have a delayed experience with the feeling that I usually get. When I have a creative insight, there is a high. I think back in the day, I made music as much as I did because it made me feel so good. I think you could argue that there is a creative addiction — but, you know, the healthy kind..... I don't know if you know this, but I have five children," she says. "The youngest is 2 now, so she's old enough that I can leave her for a period of time and know she's going to be OK. That's one reason [Hill is starting to perform again]. And I think it's just time. I'm starting to get excited again. Believe it or not, I think what people are attracted to about me, if anything, is my passion. People got exposed to my passion through music and song first. I think people might realize, you know, 'We love the way she sounds, we love the music, but I think we just love how fearless she is. How boundless she is, when it comes to what she wants to do.' And I think that can be infectious."

I really think she's back, for good this time...

Lauryn Hill At The Harmony Festival

I love the fact that Lauryn Hill is making her way back to the limelight... Last weekend she made an appearance at the 32nd Annual Harmony Festival in Santa Rosa, California. Lauryn put a new twist to “Ex-Factor,” “Fu-Gee-La,” and “Doo Wop (That Thing)” for a 75-minute set... From reviews of folks at the show, she was killin' it. A lot of people said "she's still got it"... I can't wait to see her at the Rock the Bells Tour in August.
